What is Bliss?

When one is in a state of perfect happiness, oblivious of anything else, it is called being in bliss. Blissful living is experiencing a magnified state of emotional happiness, well-being, joy and personal fulfilment, one that is ultimately the goal of each and every human on this planet.

Do you remember the times, when as a child you would get excited every time someone gave a gift to you? Or, in the more recent past, when someone close needed help badly and you extended your hand – the heightened feeling of joy and fulfilment at having been able to do so, even before being expressed gratitude, is called bliss.

Why is it then, that instead of living in a state of eternal bliss all the time, we look for situations that give us this elevated sensation?

Living blissfully is a journey

As Swami Vivekananda said – ”Life is a pilgrimage. The wise man does not rest by the roadside inns. He marches direct to the illimitable domain of eternal bliss, his ultimate destination.”

Humans are blessed with an innate sense of bliss. But, due to our life journey, which involves various lived experiences – some bitter and some happy, we tend to fall out of our natural state. Struggles, hardships and pain cause major life changes, some even leading to serious mental issues like depression, anxiety and other diseases.

What if, we could just march into the magnified state of fulfilment, joy and happiness, whatever be the situation around us? Is it achievable, you may ask? Well yes, if you believe it!

How to live blissfully each day

Everyone of us can achieve that euphoric state, if we make an honest attempt to do so, just that the idea may differ from person to person. Some of us may find happiness through helping others, while some may find the ultimate bliss and solace in their work. Whatever be the case, the foundation of living a blissful life starts with having faith and believing that it is indeed possible. By doing that, we surrender to the greater wisdom – the Universe – and let happiness pour into our lives. There is no substitute for gratitude; be grateful and set the intention to be in a blissful state at all times!

Want to know how? Let’s start with a small activity – each time during the day, recognize the moments that give you joy, and be it small or big, make a note of it. The little flash of smile that someone gives you, a hug by your child, an email from a friend or a client or it may be anything else that just elevates your feeling of happiness – live in it, give it more momentum and there you go! You are already in a state of bliss. The more often you practice it, the more adept you get at it.

Other ways:

  • Focus on what inspires you and also lifts others around you. Do it more often and consciously.
  • Remember that your emotions are actually ‘energy in motion’. So, keep them in check at all times. Do what elevates them the most.
  • Realize what yields meaning to your life – your life purpose, and work towards it each day.
  • Check yourself for any self-centered feelings. Try and get rid of it.
  • Converge on feelings of love, compassion, generosity, understanding and humility.
  • Do more of all the above activities each day.

 

Each time you find yourself getting deviated from your daily plan, remind yourself the following words of wisdom by Jim Rohn – “happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.”

If you cultivate the mindset, you can surely stay blissfully forever.
